As many as 300 people joined in the Fiji Day 50th independence anniversary celebrations in the Sugar City today.

Family members and loved ones flocked out in their blue Fiji attire to mark the special event at the Churchill Park in Lautoka.

Minister for Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Koya officiated at the event and said this special independence anniversary celebration marked a special day in the heart of every Fijian.

He informed fellow Lautoka citizens that to be a Fijian was to have courage and optimism.

“To be a Fijian is to love this country. To be a Fijian is to look after your neighbour and look after your fellow citizens irrespective of their background,” the Minister said.

An independence day celebration monument was also unveiled just outside the city centre before the official celebrations began.
