Punters in the Western Division are fond of not paying sex workers after they are rendered the service, leaving the service providers high and dry.
This was revealed to this newspaper by sex workers and transgender advocate Bonita Qio during an interview with this newspaper at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva this week.
The NGO-based in Lautoka works with adult females, transgender and sex workers in the Western Division.
“That is why we are calling on the decriminalisation of sex work in Fiji,” Bonita said.
“One of the major challenges sex workers face in the Western Division is that the clients, most of the times, refuse to pay for the service after the job is done.”
Bonita said people were forced into this industry because of their responsibilities.
“Some are doing it because they need money to pay bills, rent and put food on the table.”
Bonita said they had more than 100 members most of whom are sex workers.
