OF the $11.7 million damage bill to the agriculture sector from tropical depression (TD)04F, $2.3m was recorded in the Western Division.
In a press statement released on Saturday, the Agriculture Ministry said areas in the division that were affected included Ba, Nadroga-Navosa and Ra.
However, the damage bill did not include the sugarcane sector.
Ministry of Sugar permanent secretary Yogesh Karan said the extent and cost to the sector would be made known in two weeks’ time.
“In terms of damage, there was damage to infrastructure — culverts, cane access roads and crossings — however, damage to crops would be limited to newly prepared land for cultivation and newly planted cane crops,” he said.
Mr Karan said while the rain did cause flooding in some parts of the cane belt areas in the West, most areas had welcomed the rainfall associated with TD04F.
The true nature and cost of damage to the sugarcane industry is expected to be announced once surveys were completed.
