Wellington Phoenix general manager David Dome says Saturday night’s record crowd at Sky Stadium left everyone involved with the club feeling valued, though he was unable to say just how big a financial boost it provided.
A total of 24,105 fans came through the gates at the Phoenix’s Wellington home for the 3-0 win over Western United, giving them their largest crowd for a regular season fixture and the largest crowd in the A-League this season.
The previous regular season record was held by Eden Park in Auckland, where the Phoenix play Perth Glory on Sunday, in their second and final home match in New Zealand this season, and Dome has laid down a challenge to Auckland to take the record back and continue fuelling the team’s playoff push.
Speaking to Stuff from Sydney, where he is meeting with the other A-League bosses, Dome said Saturday was “one of the great nights in the history of this football club”.
“Ultimately I was really, really thrilled for the fans and that everything went right.
