Weather warnings remain across Fiji

A strong wind warning and coastal inundation alert remain in force for several parts of Fiji as rough seas, damaging swells and strong southeast winds continue to affect the country.

The Fiji Meteorological Service said strong southeast winds of up to 46 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching 55 kilometres per hour, are expected over the coastal land areas of southern and eastern Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, the Yasawa Group, Taveuni, Lau, Lomaiviti, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

The warning remains in place for coastal communities from Natadola through the Coral Coast to Navua, as well as parts of Tailevu, Ra, southern Bua, Cakaudrove and Udu Point.

Weather officials have also maintained a coastal inundation alert for low-lying coastal areas of Yasawa, Mamanuca, southern Viti Levu, Taveuni, Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu, warning that sea flooding is likely, particularly during high tides.

According to the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi, the adverse conditions are being caused by a high-pressure system southwest of Fiji, generating moderate to damaging heavy southerly swells across the country.

The system is producing rough to very rough seas in affected areas, posing risks to small craft operators, coastal communities and marine activities.

Residents in vulnerable coastal locations are being urged to remain vigilant and monitor weather updates as sea conditions may lead to flooding of low-lying areas.

The forecast until midnight tonight indicates cloudy periods with brief showers over Navua, Suva, Nausori, Serua, Namosi, Naitasiri, Rewa, Tailevu, Ra, eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, southern Bua, Taveuni, Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu.

Elsewhere, mainly fine weather is expected, apart from isolated afternoon or evening showers.

Authorities continue to advise the public, especially those living along exposed coastlines, to take necessary precautions and stay informed through official weather bulletins.
