Around 70 golfers gathered at the Fiji Golf Club in Vatuwaqa yesterday to participate in the Stableford golf event, sponsored by Captain Zavir Khan and Nigel Gounder.

Despite coinciding with other major golf events in Pacific Harbor and Denarau, Mohammed Buksh, the sponsorship chairman of Fiji Golf Club, expressed satisfaction with the turnout.

“We are looking for about 70 players because a lot of them had probably gone down to Pacific Harbor or like Denarau,” Buksh said.

Among those participating was Indonesian Ambassador, Dupito Simamora, who has been a regular golfer for 20 years.

Simamora emphasized the balance of fun, exercise, and social interaction that golf brings.

“Golf is a great way to build friendships and social networking,” Simamora noted, pointing to his Waidamudamu group, a charity-focused organization.

The group supports local homes such as Delainakasi Homes and Chevalier, with all proceeds aimed at giving back to the community.

Simamora also hopes to see more young people take up the sport, viewing golf as a positive way to stay active and create lasting friendships.

“For the young ones that want to take up the sport, golf is a good sport, and I believe that is very fair and you can build friendships,” he added.

Though the Stableford event is not held as frequently as participants might wish, the casual yet competitive atmosphere has continued to attract players weekly.
