Weather advice for Westerners

Listen to this article:

RESIDENTS of the Western Division should prepare for a humid start to the week as a prevailing easterly wind flow continues to dictate local weather patterns.

Fiji Meteorological Services forecaster Steven Meke confirmed that while the morning hours may offer some relief, the afternoons are likely to bring a shift in conditions.

“For the Western Division, for tomorrow (today), we expect a lot of easterly wind flow, almost a lot of easterly wind flow to be affecting the group, “he said.

“So, for the West, we expect mainly humid conditions with afternoon showers and thunderstorms.”

As the new week begins, Mr Meke said the easterly flow was expected to persist, though the intensity of the winds would remain relatively low.

“On Monday, we expect a lot of easterly wind flow to come in, but the winds to be very light. So we still expect some isolated afternoon thunderstorms for us in the West but mainly the weather should be okay in the morning.”

Mr Meke said clouds would also build up in the afternoon with showers and thunderstorms, however, conditions at sea are also expected to see a gradual easing.

Mr Meke stated that the current easterly wind flow of 15 to 20 knots will likely decrease as the winds shift direction.

“At the moment, we have easterly wind flow, 15 to 20 knots, but we expect this wind to ease. Tomorrow (today) we expect the winds to turn to north easterly, around 10 to 15 knots.”

The outlook for the rest of the country suggests more persistent dampness, particularly for those in the East.

With the wind shifting to a north-easterly direction, the Northern, Central, and Eastern divisions are on alert for more frequent rain.

“For the Eastern Division, because we are expecting the winds to be coming from the Northeast, so we, mostly they will expect showers for most parts of the day, as well as some isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms.”
