Water leakages in the Suva to Sawani corridor are expected to reduce by 20 per cent in the next five years.
Minister for Public Works and Infrastructure Ro Filipe Tuisawau said this reduction was part of the broader Princes Rd water infrastructure project, which aimed to address and significantly cut down the current leakage rate of 47 per cent.
Speaking in Parliament this week, Ro Filipe said the project would include performance-based contract initiatives focused on hydrolytic improvements and advanced leakage detection methodologies.
He said the Princes Rd water infrastructure project was a key component of this strategy, designed to improve the efficiency of water distribution and infrastructure.
Additionally, the ongoing Viria Project is addressing water supply shortfalls and has already shown noticeable improvements.
In the interim, water tank assistance has been provided to areas experiencing intermittent water supply, such as Sakoca.
Ro Filipe said applications for these water tanks were received and prioritised based on need.
“An example, just related to Viria we have agreed with the landowners to extend the pipelines. These pipelines cover the villages of Viria, Waitolu, Naqali, Navatuvula and Naqali government stations and all household communities along Sawani.
“For those, we must apply for the water meters and connections and WAF will be going there, community by community. So as the extensions are done, the awareness and discussions with communities along that are happening. Especially in terms of the application and the facilitating.”
He encouraged residents of these areas to apply for water meters and connections as pipeline extensions progress.
