VILLAGERS of Vunikodi in the district of Udu, Macuata continue to struggle to access clean and reliable water, despite funds reportedly being allocated for the purpose.
Villager Josaia Waqanivalu said the issue had been raised multiple times at district and provincial meetings although no real progress had been made.
“There have been several conversations at district and provincial meetings regarding the water issue faced by the villagers of Vunikodi, but nothing has changed,” Mr Waqanivalu said.
He said the village did not have a regular water supply and continues to depend heavily on rainwater collected in tanks and drums.
“The water we use every day is from the rain, which is collected in tanks.
“We are one of the villages that do not have running water.”
Mr Waqanivalu said rainwater was mainly used for cooking and drinking while water collected in drums and containers was used for washing clothes and dishes.
“This is an issue we have faced for so long.
“When there is a water crisis, we write to the commissioner’s office to request water carting services.”
Mr Waqanivalu said there were times when the village could go for weeks without rainfall, making daily life difficult.
“There is no water in the village and it’s an issue we can face for months.
“We rely on the rain, and when there is none for weeks, it becomes a challenge for us.
“We’re still trying to find an alternative source of water and we hope the authorities can assist.”
Attempts to seek a comment from Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima were unsuccessful.
