The Water Authority of Fiji says contrary to claims made by former chief executive officer Opetaia Ravai recently, all units within the utility provider are still active.

WAF issued a statement in response to claims made by Mr Ravai that the disbanding of critical departments, lack of resources and poor planning has resulted in recurring water issues.

Mr Ravai also said WAF should consider the growing population and the increasing demand for water when putting systems in place.

“None have been disbanded,” WAF said. The authority also said the turnover rate at WAF was not high.

“As at 31 March 2022, our turnover rate was 6.52 per cent which is below Fiji’s industry average.”

Mr Ravai also said he was not sure if WAF was doing water modelling, a system where infrastructure was simulated with computer software.

WAF said water modelling was an integral part of its operations.

“Water modelling is an intrinsic part of planning for water delivery, and we comprehensively overhauled our water models in the years since so it more accurately reflects current needs.

“These new water models have been completed and are in use to determine what work needs to be undertaken in the Suva-Nausori system, including modelling the servicing strategy of the Viria Water Project.”
