The Methodist Church’s outgoing president, the Rev Ili Vunisuwai, has spoken of the need for pastors to always uphold the traditions and culture of the people.
He made the comment in response to a call by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere that some churches were coming up with new belief systems that were dividing the people.
Ratu Wiliame had said this was causing arguments and disputes among some clans.
“You should not be easily swayed by new inter-denominations in Fiji,” he said.
Mr Vunisuwai said it did not mean they had received the gospel to provoke culture.
“I agree with the statement made by Ratu Wiliame,” he said.
“We all come from traditional homes, we must uphold cultural practices.
“Culture is part and parcel of our social journey.”
Mr Vunisuwai said it had brought some reassurance that the issue had been finally addressed by a paramount chief.
