VISITOR flows from Australia remain strongly supported through multiple gateways with far higher demand, says Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association CEO Fantasha Lockington.
Responding to reports that Fiji Airways will suspend services to the Australian capital next year, Ms Lockington said FHTA respected the operational decision of the national airline.
“Airlines must continually review their networks to ensure efficiency, sustainability, and alignment with broader market demand, and we acknowledge the national carrier’s responsibility to make such adjustments,” she said.
“While Canberra has been a valued point of access, visitor flows from Australia remain strongly supported through multiple gateways with far higher demand including Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, which continue to provide robust connectivity.”
Ms Lockington added they did not anticipate a material impact on overall arrivals given the strength of these existing routes and the diversity of our Australian source markets.
“We remain confident that Fiji Airways’ network strategy will continue to underpin visitor demand and sustain Fiji’s competitiveness as a destination, while operators focus on delivering exceptional experiences that encourage repeat visitation and long term loyalty.”
This week, Canberra Airport executives expressed disappointment over the confirmation by Fiji Airways its services would be suspended on February 5, 2027.
Questions sent to Fiji Airways on Thursday remain unanswered.
