WATER woes for some villagers in Matamaivere in Namara, Tailevu will now be a thing of the past thanks to the Water Authority of Fiji.
WAF will soon complete rainwater harvesting projects for these villagers, allowing them to have access to free flow of water.
Matamaivere is one of the villages earmarked in this year’s (2017-2018) Rural Water Scheme Budget.
Village headman Emosi Waqairavoka said villagers drew water from a well for their everyday use.
“Men, women and children living in the village use a well for washing and bathing, but have relied on rainwater for drinking and cooking,” Mr Waqairavoka said.
Mr Waqairavoka said they were now happy to see a change in the village.
He said the villagers had been working hand in hand with the WAF workers to help complete the project.
“Every week two clans in our village help with cooking and the men lend a hand to the WAF staff each day. So far, I think we are doing well despite having to wait for concrete to cure and the delays caused by rain.
“Twenty houses will benefit from the project, the remainder already have their water tanks in place.
“Tank stands are being built and guttering, downpipes and associated fittings installed, and an existing concrete water tank is to be mended.
“Guttering has also been installed on the village church roof where the villagers plan to install a 10,000 litre water tank under their own initiative,” he said.
