Children, elders, and local leaders joined forces in Nayavu Village, Tailevu, earlier this month to clean up their community in a show of grassroots action for the environment.
The initiative was part of a joint campaign led by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), in collaboration with the Tailevu Provincial Council and villagers of Nayavu, including enthusiastic participation from children.
The campaign focused on encouraging proper waste management in itaukei registered villages and promoting greater community responsibility for environmental protection.
Environment officer Sakenasa Namisi was present to oversee the clean-up drive, guiding participants in sorting and weighing the waste collected. At the end of the exercise, a total of 22 kilograms of recyclable materials and 56 kilograms of general waste had been gathered.
The clean-up drive also formed part of the Tailevu Provincial Council’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, which supports community-driven environmental initiatives throughout the province. It also aligns with the national Do The Right Thing Anti-Litter Campaign.
According to the ministry, the involvement of villagers across all age groups, especially the children, reflects a growing awareness of environmental issues at the grassroots level.
The ministry extended its thanks to all who took part and reaffirmed its stance that environmental sustainability must be a shared responsibility.
