BEING selected to represent Fiji at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, is more than just a sporting achievement for 23-year-old para-athlete Sitiveni Konataci as it is the fulfilment of a dream built on perseverance, sacrifice, and unwavering determination.
Hailing from Burerua Village in Sawakasa, Tailevu, Konataci was overcome with emotion when he received the life-changing call informing him that he had been selected for Team Fiji.
“I was at home when I received the call,” he recalled.
“I became very emotional because it reminded me of all the sacrifices, hard work, and challenges I have gone through to reach this point.”
Konataci will compete in the Para Men’s discus event, a sport in which he has steadily risen through the ranks.
Earlier this year, he represented Fiji at the Oceania Athletics Championships in Darwin, Australia, where he produced a personal best throw of 28.55 metres.
That performance gave him confidence that he could compete on a much bigger stage.
“Since returning from the Oceania Championships, I have pushed myself even harder in training and am now throwing further than my personal best,” he said.
Living with a leg disability has presented many obstacles throughout his life, but Konataci refuses to let it define his future.
“My condition does not stop me from chasing my goals. I am going to the Commonwealth Games with the aim of bringing home a medal for Fiji.”
What makes the achievement even more special is that he will become the first person from his village to represent Fiji as a para-athlete at the Commonwealth Games.
“Every day when I go to training, the villagers give me their blessings and encouragement. Their support motivates me because I know I am carrying their hopes with me.”
While transportation costs and other financial challenges have tested his resolve, Konataci remains focused on his dream.
He credits his family, friends, teammates, and the people of his village for helping him stay strong.
“Their advice, support, and belief in me keep me going. I want to make them proud and do my best for Fiji.”
