THREE Labasa-based police officers are under investigation for allegedly accepting a bribe from a suspect held in custody.

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has taken over the criminal element of the case following a direct referral from the Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu.

The investigation stems from allegations that the three officers accepted a sum of more than $100 from an accused person locked up at the Labasa Police Station in Namara.

According to police sources, the individual who came forward to report the complaint is a serving police officer.

Commissioner Tudravu has since ordered a concurrent internal probe to determine exactly what transpired and whether any force regulations were breached.

Police confirmed that the matter is being treated with the utmost seriousness, noting that both the internal affairs unit and the independent anti-corruption agency will investigate simultaneously.

“FICAC will investigate any possible criminal offences, while the internal affairs unit will handle disciplinary action if needed.”

The investigations remain ongoing.
