A NEW chapter was written in the history books of the Vatulele Rugby Union when its club games were officially opened recently.

The event, which took place on Friday, May 29, was an occasion where three teams from Vatulele Island crossed over to the mainland where a ceremony of great fanfare was held in Votua Village.

Attending the ceremony were the traditional leaders of the vanua of Davutukia, Kini Buruavatu, the chief of the yavusa Vusu, Misiwata Raiwaqari and Ratu Joji Toge, a representative of the vanua of Namolilevu on behalf of the Vunihalevu.

Their presence for the occasion laid the way for the competition, which ran its third round of club matches yesterday and the fourth-round next week.

Meanwhile, the three teams are featuring in the club competition along with teams from the mainland, three from Serua such as Nabukelevu, Navutulevu and Naboutini.

Serua’s teams joined at the request of the games committee.

Five matches were played on the opening day where the talent and passion of the competing teams were shown in full force.

The club competition for the 13 team in the Vatulele Rugby Union is divided into two zones; zone one on Vatulele Island where Tegu ni Baravi, Taunovo and Senigigia compete while zone two is held on the mainland where ten teams battle it out for top honours.

Club matches have been held alternately between the island and the mainland and while it may seem challenging in a logistical aspect, the games committee has worked tirelessly to ensure every round proceeded smoothly.
