POLICE will not disclose further developments in the investigation into the death of Jone Vakarisi until someone is charged, as the case continues months after his death in military custody.
Police made the statement yesterday following questions about the progress of the investigation, which began in April.
“Investigation is following its due course and we will not be releasing details until someone is charged,” police said.
Mr Vakarisi died on April 17 after being taken to the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) headquarters at Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Nabua, Suva for questioning over weapons and ammunition reported missing by the military. His death was classified as murder following post-mortem examination findings that indicated severe head and chest injuries, with asphyxia listed as the cause of death. This contradicted the military’s initial statement that he had suffered a medical emergency linked to a pre-existing condition.
In September, police confirmed that five of eight individuals identified as likely suspects had been questioned.
Investigators were expected to complete interviews before forwarding the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for independent legal review.
