A TOTAL of 130 vacant teaching positions in the country’s 738 primary and 176 secondary schools will soon be filled.
Fiji Teachers Union general secretary Muniappa Gounder said following a meeting with senior Ministry of Education officials last Thursday, union members were assured the ministry would begin their search to fill the vacant posts.
“The Fiji Teachers Union welcomes the outcome of its meeting with officials of the Ministry of Education held on Thursday, 27 August 2026, where it was agreed that all substantively vacant teaching positions in both primary and secondary schools will be advertised on Saturday, 29 August 2026,” said Mr Gounder.
“The positions to be advertised comprise 37 secondary school positions, including five large, four medium and 28 small school positions, and 93 primary school positions, comprising six large, 21 medium and 66 small school positions.”
He said the union considered this a welcome and long overdue development.
“Particularly in addressing the ongoing need to fill substantively vacant positions and strengthen staffing in schools across the country.
“Timely filling of these positions is important to ensure stability in schools and provide teachers with appropriate opportunities for career progression and professional advancement.
“The union, therefore, strongly encourages all eligible and suitably qualified teachers to take advantage of this opportunity and submit their applications for the advertised positions.
“The FTU remains committed to working constructively with the Ministry of Education to address teacher-related issues and ensure that our schools are adequately staffed for the benefit of teachers and, most importantly, the children we serve.”
