Uto ni Yalo Trust vice president Carson Young says the Uto ni Yalo needs some urgent maintenance work not unlike any ocean-going vessel for it to be seaworthy once again.
He said the canoe was berthed in Suva and needed to undergo maintenance work before it could sail and the trust was seeking funds for the works.
“It needs to undergo general maintenance work like repainting while other items such as sails and ropes which have seen it’s fair share of wear and tear, all need to be completely replaced and it should take at least four weeks,” Mr Young said.
“All the maintenance work is expected to be carried out here in Suva and that is the main reason why it’s in the Capital City.
“We are presently seeking funds from potential corporate donors for the maintenance work.”
He said the trust planned to continue with its ocean advocacy work once the canoe was made seaworthy.
“We will continue working with other stakeholders, partners and the community in creating and promoting awareness on environmental issues, while at the same time continue to nurture and encourage our rich canoe culture,” Mr Young said.
