Use whistleblowing policy to fight fraud

THE Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd should look into raising awareness on fraud among its employers through a whistle-blowing policy.

This was a recommendation in the Auditor-General’s 2014 report.

“Lacked awareness on fraud may not encourage employees to come forward to report any suspicious activities in the company,” the report stated.

“The Human Resources Department should ensure that regular fraud awareness workshops are undertaken.”

In response, FPCL noted the report’s comments adding management would ensure their recommendations were taken on board.

Meanwhile the audit also noted accounted investment of $1 million between FPCL and the Fiji Ships and Heavy Industries Ltd. The report recommended that FPCL ensure variances were rectified and adjusted accordingly in the 2014 financial year.

The report also revealed that FPCL owed the Republic of Fiji Military Forces $195,841 for security services provided in 2007. It recommended that FPCL liaise with the military to resolve the issue.

“Management has taken up this matter with RFMF and correspondences have been made accordingly and a deadline of 31st March was given,” FPCL responded in the report.

“RFMF has not been able to produce any documentation to support payment of this. Management will now seek board endorsement for write-back of these amounts.”
