THE United States Coast Guard Cutter USCGC Harriet Lane four-day visit to Fiji reflected a shared commitment between the United States and Fiji to protect the Blue Pacific.

The USCGC Harriet Lane commanding officer, Commander Justin Matejka said the vessel’s visit reflected the shared commitment between the two countries while strengthening maritime cooperation, community engagement and regional security.

He said the visit was driven by the understanding that Fiji’s prosperity and the wellbeing of its people are closely linked to a healthy and secure maritime environment.

“The US Coast Guard is here as your steadfast partner, founded on a deep and abiding respect for Fiji’s sovereignty and your vital leadership role in the region,” Cmdr. Matejka said.

He said the relationship between the two countries extended beyond maritime operations and is built on meaningful engagement with the Fijian community.

“Our partnership isn’t just about operations at sea; it’s about building a community,” he said.

“During our time here in Suva, my crew is thrilled to step off the ship and engage with the local community.”

During the visit, crew members visited a school, participated in sporting activities with students and welcomed students aboard Harriet Lane, providing them with an opportunity to experience life on board a United States Coast Guard cutter.

Alongside community activities, the crew held professional exchanges with Fiji’s Maritime Surveillance Rescue Coordination Centre, where they discussed search and rescue practices, maritime surveillance and maritime domain awareness.

Commander Matejka said the exchanges were essential to strengthening the capabilities of both countries.

“That shared engagement is key to expanding our mutual capacity to confront direct threats, whether they are natural or otherwise,” he said.

A key feature of the deployment is the participation of five Fijian ship riders representing the Fiji Navy, Fiji Maritime Surveillance Rescue Coordination Centre, Fiji Police Force and the Fisheries Ministry.

“We are immensely proud to be hosting five Fijian ship riders on board,” Cmdr Matejka said.

“As we go out, we will conduct a bilateral patrol to deter illegal fishing activities, narcotics trafficking and other illicit activities that may be occurring within Fiji’s sovereign waters.

“They will do that under the express authority and direction of the ship riders.”

The bilateral patrol forms part of the cutter’s broader mission profile, which includes search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, maritime defence and environmental protection.

For Commander Matejka, the visit underscores the value of cooperation between trusted maritime partners.

By combining operational patrols, professional knowledge sharing and community outreach, the four-day visit demonstrates a shared commitment to protecting Fiji’s maritime interests and promoting a safer, more secure Blue Pacific.
