The United States says it looks forward to deepening its partnership with Fiji, as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Fijians on the country’s national day.

In a Fiji National Day statement issued on October 9, Mr Rubio said the United States valued its relationship with Fiji and recognised the country’s contribution to the Pacific region.

“On behalf of the United States of America, I extend my warmest congratulations to the people of Fiji as you celebrate your national day,” Mr Rubio said.

He said Fiji Day provided an opportunity to recognise the country’s history and cultural heritage.

“Today is an opportunity to honor Fiji’s rich history and cultural heritage.”

Mr Rubio said the relationship between the two countries was underpinned by shared regional interests.

“The United States values our strong partnership with Fiji, built on our shared commitment to prosperity, peace, and security in the Pacific,” he said.

He also highlighted ongoing cooperation through the Millennium Challenge Corporation, saying this was helping establish the foundation for closer relations.

“Our ongoing work together through the Millennium Challenge Corporation is laying the foundation for the U.S.-Fiji partnership to reach new heights in years to come.”

Mr Rubio said Washington appreciated Fiji’s contribution to the wider Pacific and wanted cooperation between the two countries to continue growing.

“We appreciate Fiji’s important contributions to the region, and we look forward to deepening our collaboration in the years ahead.”

He concluded: “I wish you a prosperous and joyous Fiji Day.”
