The United States Embassy in Suva celebrated the 250th anniversary of American Independence with an evening of culture, music and friendship, bringing together national leaders, diplomats and invited guests.
President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka joined Chargé d’Affaires ad interim John Degory and other regional representatives for the occasion.
In his address, Mr Degory said the celebration reflected the shared values of freedom, democracy and partnership between the United States, Fiji and the wider Pacific.
Guests sampled a variety of American dishes from different regions of the country, watched performances by the US Army’s 25th Infantry Division Band and the Fiji Police Dance Band, and took part in activities highlighting American sports and culture.
Displays also showcased the long-standing relationship between Fiji and the United States, including cooperation in development, security, education and people-to-people exchanges.
Mr Degory acknowledged the importance of democracy, saying every nation follows its own path while working towards peace, stability and progress.
The celebrations ended with a fireworks display, marking a milestone in the United States’ history and reaffirming its commitment to strengthening ties with Fiji through the Freedom 250 initiative.
