THE five people who were in contact with the American couple, David and Michelle Paul, before they died only had minor symptoms of fever and felt unwell.
This was revealed by Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete as investigations into the couple’s death continued.
He said all necessary precautions were taken to ensure the safety of health officials who were in contact with the couple.
Mr and Mrs Paul died from a ‘mysterious’ illness during their holiday at one of the resorts in Nadi last month.
Dr Waqainabete also refuted rumours that a ministry’s staff who came into contact with the couple had died.
He clarified that none of his staff members had died as speculated by many over social media.
“I have had people who have been questioning me whether one of our staff had died, none of our staff died and again all the necessary precautions have been done in regards to those who have been in contact,” he said.
“As the Ministry of Health, we have to be very mindful, what we do know at this moment in time — all those that were in contact with the two are all well — none of them are sick.
“We are making sure that we are monitoring them on a regular basis and I am pleased to say that none of them are unwell.
“We hope that this is only localised to the couple.
“We obviously feel for the young couple.”
