Diwali is a festive season and is a period of great significance to everyone regardless of their age, background, religion, language or social status.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar during the Diwali celebration in Ba.
“Diwali is a time to unite and strengthen our communities to care for our families and those around us, particularly in caring for our senior citizens who have contributed towards the development of our nation,” Mrs Akbar said.
“In 2013, the ministry approved and implemented a comprehensive social package such as: Poverty Benefit Scheme; Social Pension Scheme; and bus fare concessions for the elderly and persons living with disabilities. I am pleased to note that these services are now available to our senior citizens across the Fiji.
“My hope for the year ahead is that in this spirit of looking to the light, we may appreciate and enjoy each other’s festivals as a commitment to mutual goodwill and faith in each other.”
She said through such celebrations, people should recommit themselves in creating a better world by being helpful and considerate towards the welfare of others.
“We seek to reflect on what has gone before and to reconnect with the light which is present within us,” Mrs Akbar said.
“Diwali is a time to reflect on our lives, to ensure that we are able to not only care for our families but also those around us. It creates an atmosphere of care, compassion and respect for others especially those who may be in need of our support.”
