“I FELT like I haven’t achieved all my dreams.”
Those were the words of former Fiji Finals champion and Pacific Games silver medalist Meli Romuakalou Junior after running the Mini Games qualifying time for the 400 metres hurdles at the Fiji National Athletics Championship held at the HFC Bank Stadium over the weekend.
The 23-year-old clocked 56.2 seconds in the event, beating the qualifying time of 56.8 seconds.
This marks a strong comeback for Meli, who took a two-year break from athletics.
“I started the 400m hurdles around three to four years ago, but then took some time off,” he said.
“Coming back wasn’t easy. I’ve been coaching in between, but deep down I knew I hadn’t achieved all I wanted in the sport. That’s why I returned.”
In his first Mini Games trial, he clocked 57s.
“Qualifying means a lot to me. I’ve had to train on my own using a program I created myself since Coach Albert Miller is away in Palau. Thankfully, other coaches have been there to supervise and advise when I need help.”
Currently standing as Fiji’s only 400m hurdler, Meli credited his older sister as his biggest supporter.
“She’s been there since 2015 when I first started. She helps with my diet, training needs, everything.”
He previously represented Fiji at the Oceania Championships in the 400m hurdles but was unable to finish the race due to injury.
Now, with qualification secured, he’s ready for a second chance.
