A 22-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to five years imprisonment by the Nausori Magistrates Court for sexually assaulting his six-year-old cousin.
The man sexually assaulted his cousin on June 23, 2017 when she was sent by her mother to fetch some prawns.
The court was told that the victim’s mother trusted the accused.
Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne while sentencing the accused last week said “With the increase number of child sexual abuse cases reported in this country, I am of the view that harsh sentences are warranted from the courts to denounce the offenders.”
The accused will have to serve a total of four years before he is released for parole.
