FIJI stands as the world’s top troop and police contributor per capita to United Nations operations, says UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix.
Mr Lacroix highlighted this during an official welcome at Blackrock Camp in Votualevu, Nadi.
He was received by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Minister for Defence Pio Tikoduadua, and Minister for Foreign Affairs Sakiasi Ditoka.
“The same generosity is expressed by the valiant peacekeepers from Fiji, who serve and have been serving for many decades in the cause of peace in many regions across the world, far from home, with bravery and gallantry,” he said.
“Fiji truly is an example of dedication and commitment to humanity.”
Mr Lacroix also paid tribute to the men and women from Fiji who are currently serving in the Middle East and Africa.
“I want to pay my respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of peace.
“We are looking forward to continuing the wonderful cooperation we’ve had with your country. We would want to develop it further and I believe that looking at these very impressive training facilities, there is a lot of potential that we would wish to explore with you to do more.”
Beyond peacekeeping, Mr Lacroix applauded Fiji’s global leadership on climate change and regional security, promising to help ensure the Pacific’s voice is heard on the world stage.
Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua reaffirmed Fiji’s 50-year dedication to multilateralism and global peace efforts.
“His visit to Fiji, amongst other things, is to strengthen and solidify Fiji’s commitment to peace in the world, and especially to the United Nations,” he said.
The UN expressed confidence that continued collaboration will bolster current and future international missions.
