U20 side wants to return to top spot

THE Viliame Gadolo coached Vodafone Fiji under- 20 side have only one task ahead of them as they try to make their way back into the Junior World Cup Championship.

This is after the side was relegated to the eight team Junior World Trophy Tournament which will be held from May 12 to 24 in Lisbon, Portugal.

The team has to win the junior tournament in order to claim its spot back in the Tier 1 competition.

The Fiji U20 team was relegated from the JWC 2014.

The junior national side is grouped in Pool A alongside Uruguay, Georgia and hosts Portugal. Fellow Pacific Islanders Tonga, USA, Namibia and Hong Kong make up Pool B.

A 31-member squad was announced by coach Bill Gadolo yesterday in Suva.

A mixture of both local and overseas players have been named in the squad from where the final 26 players will be selected for the tournament.

The most notable inclusion in the team is former Fiji 7’s coach Joe Savou’s son, Filimoni Savou who will join the team in Portugal.

Gadolo said that he and his management had chosen the right players to carry the team forward.

“It was not easy to select the best 31 players from a player base of more than 80 players. We had a tour of Australia recently where we played two buildup games as preparation.

“We are also glad that we have managed to get the services of Filimoni Savou who has been in the English system for some time now. He will provide a wealth of experience,” Gadolo said.

Vodafone Fiji sponsorship manger Adriu Vakarau said the company believed the team chosen would do well at the tournament and were grateful to partner FRU in the cause.

The Fiji U20 plays Namibia on May 12 followed by Hong Kong on May 16 and Uruguay on May 20.
