A RECURRING challenge!

The Fiji Football Association’s under-19 2024/2025 women’s league kicked off at the Pacific Theological College ground in Nasese on Saturday, but just like in the past, player shortages affected the scheduled matches.

The competition set to run for seven weeks with three matches every Saturday saw only one game played.

Tailevu Naitasiri secured a 2-0 victory over Nasinu.

Lami and Tailevu North failed to field teams, resulting in Suva and Rewa winning by default.

Head coach of the Fiji women’s national and U19 girls’ soccer teams Angeline Chua, acknowledged the challenges particularly for Lami which lost seven players to Nasinu.

“With such a big shift in players, it’s understandable that Lami is struggling to field a squad. Our focus now is on scouting new talent to help them rebuild,” Chua said.

Tailevu North also struggled because of travel logistics.

“They are quite far from Suva, so it’s our responsibility to check on them and offer support,” she added.

Chua highlighted the need for more officials, as many coaches manage multiple age groups.

She suggested offering incentives to clubs that maintain strong youth programs.

With the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 qualifiers and the OFC Women’s Nations Cup approaching, selectors are closely monitoring players.

“So, there are the qualifiers and of course if you are good enough, you’re eligible to for the scouting for the women’s team.”

Despite setbacks, Fiji FA remains committed to completing the league and developing the next generation of women’s footballers.
