HEAD coach Inoke Cakautini is impressed with the performance displayed by the Fiji AFL under-15 team over the weekend after the Fiji Vonu girls’ team secured victory in the competition.

The event saw teams from Nauru, Papua New Guinea, and Australia come together, showcasing their talents and competing fiercely.

Cakautini is advocating for young individuals to consider pursuing AFL if they aspire to represent the country in sports.

“While AFL may not be a mainstream sport in Fiji, it offers comparable benefits to other popular sports in terms of opportunities for national reps,” said Cakautini.

“The success of the Oceania Cup competition underscored the dedication and skill demonstrated by all participating teams, particularly Team Fiji.

“The Fiji Junior Vonu girls’ team’s triumph in the AFL under-15 Oceania Cup is a significant milestone for a nation that is gradually developing its AFL program.”

Cakautin encourages youths to explore AFL as a pathway to sporting success and reflects the sport’s potential to provide scholarships and overseas contracts, similar to other prevalent sports in Fiji.

Departing from the rugby-centric sporting culture, AFL presents a promising platform for showcasing talent and representing the country.

Expressing gratitude to Australia for its support in fostering AFL’s growth in Fiji, Cakautini envisions a future where more young individuals embrace the sport.
