The Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MOHMS) has confirmed reports of an outbreak of typhoid, caused by a mass gathering in Wainiyavu Village in Namosi.

In a statement, it said this occurred from the end of May to the end of June where 11 cases were recorded.

MOHMS said seven cases were reported from Wainiyavu Village, one case in Burotu, one from Wainimakutu, one in Wailoaloa and one case find in Nabukavesi Village.

The source of transmission in these five villages was the use of contaminated river water for common household use. MOHMS said their water dam was currently being serviced by the Water Authority of Fiji.

The medical team mobilised a Sub-Divisional Response Outbreak team to conduct disease investigation, community screening, water and stool sampling,” MOHMS said.

“Due to non-compliance of village restrictions, the response teams have advised neighbouring villages in the upper Namosi Province to minimise inter-village movements and unnecessary mass gatherings.”
