RA flyer Sireli Bobo was listed in the Tongan hit list because of his sterling 60m try against Tonga in last year’s PNC game which enabled Fiji to win the PNC title.
But the Flying Fijians speed merchant instead added salt in the wounds of the Tongan players scoring two breathtaking tries to help the Vodafone Flying Fijians thump Tonga 45-17 at Lautoka’s Churchill Park yesterday.
His first try in the 32nd minute — arguably the best try of the game — started from a turnover inside Fiji’s tryline. The ball was thrown like hot potato among the backs for Bobo to finish over the tryline.
The 38-year-old speed merchant defied all odds and mesmerised the opposition with deft sidesteps and blistering speed to score his second try in the 72nd minute of the game.
Tongan rugby coach Mana Otai admitted his boys failed to contain the Fijian flyer despite being listed in their hit list.
“Gees! Bobo was running like one of the younger guys during the game,” he said.
“It’s a luxury to have a player like him on the flanks.
“This is a typical example if you give the ball to the Fijians they will punish you.”
Flying Fijians mentor John McKee also echoed the same sentiments.
“Bobo is an amazing player, he has the experience and speed to burn.”
The soft-spoken flyer credited his achievement to the Almighty Lord and to his teammates.
Bobo said he was aware of the opposition’s ploy to contain him which motivated him to come out of his comfort zone and delivered the goods.
“Those two tries were made possible through teamwork and I gave the credit to my teammates,” he said.
“It was a team effort and most importantly it was through the Lord’s guidance and blessing that enabled me to score those tries.
“I know before the game that I was one of the marked men but I left everything to the Lord.
“The bible verse from Proverbs Chapter 16 verse 3 motivated me during the game — It says commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans,” he added.
Watisoni Votu also scored a double while Nemani Nadolo and Dominiko Waqaniburotu registered a try each. Fiji’s other points were from Nadolo’s boot.
Tongan replacement flanker Viliami Fihaki scored two tries for the visitors with fly half Fangatapu Apikotoa adding the extras. Fiji led 24-3 at the break.
