Two crew members of a ship that recently travelled to Rotuma have been arrested for selling marijuana on the island.

Marine Safety Authority of Fiji CEO Joeli Cawaki confirmed this as border security agencies continue to work together in their war against drugs.

“This week we met with the Acting Commissioner of Police and the Commander of the Navy about the drug trade that we are seeing,” said Mr Cawaki.

“We are working very closely to see the areas that we need to focus on because it is a very real problem.

“For our maritime industry it is something that we are very concerned about because it is happening in our industry too.”

Mr Cawaki said he was concerned that seafarers have been caught transporting and selling drugs.

“Unfortunately, we have had cases where crew members have been caught.

“Just this week, we found two crew members of Goundar Shipping on a trip to Rotuma, had taken marijuana and sold it to villagers.

“They were caught in Rotuma and arrested.”
