Residents of Verata Wailevu, outsidNausori were shocked after witnessing an accident which claimed the life of a woman and a child early yesterday.
The residents said it was the worst accident they had ever seen in their lifetime.
It is alleged that the driver of the vehicle, while overtaking a truck, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and hit an electric post.
Police said because of the alleged impact of the accident, the woman died at the scene, while the child was pronounced dead upon reaching the Nausori Health Centre.
Talking on the condition of anonymity, a resident said she had been living in the area for almost 22 years and this was the worst accident she had seen.
“It happened sometimes after one in the morning when we heard a big bang sound,” she said.
“Just within a few minutes, all the people from here and the nearby village had gathered to assist, but unfortunately the woman had died.
“The car was smashed into two pieces and the woman was thrown out of the car – that’s how serious this accident was.”
Another resident said the area had become dangerous after the removal of curfew hours.
Police said the driver was in custody while they were looking for another man who was travelling in the vehicle and had brought the child to the Nausori Health Centre.
“Police know his identity and continue to search for him this morning,” police said.
