LAST year, the Waqatabu twins Regina and Josephine Waqatabu of CMF College respectively won gold and silver in the subjunior girls high jump and this year, in the junior grade, they did it again, this time
winning gold and bronze in the same event.
Regina jumped 1.63m to finish first and Josephine in third with 1.55m.
The duo continued the tradition they had with their mother to make a bet to win $100 and a smartphone.
Speaking of the achievement, the duo were elated at what they earned on the field and said it was part of a concerted effort to work together for what they were aiming to achieve.
“The one thing that kept us going through this whole journey is we managed to work together, stay
together and also pray together for our talent,” Josephine said.
“We also loved being outside and exposing ourselves because coach (Fereti) Inoke found some potential in
us and we’re just really grateful for his vision.”
The duo were beyond overjoyed with what they achieved as they reaped the fruits of their hard work.
“The journey has been wonderful; we came through challenges but we overcame them through
love and by working together,” Josephine stated.
“And we also want to thank the teachers who are supporting us through the camp and I also thank the
coach, my family and the supporters who always supported us when we go to jump.”
Meanwhile, their coach Fereti Inoke applauded them for a job well done.
“I thank them for always being there for training; they have been giving their 100 per cent in training,”
Inoke stated.
He urged them to expand their horizons towards national representation in what he says would be an
opportunity for them to become great athletes and ambassadors for Fiji in the future.
