FORMER Fiji sevens captain and double Olympic Gold medalist Jerry Tuwai has officially begun a new phase in his rugby journey after being appointed assistant coach for the Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s Sevens Team, stepping into coaching after a highly decorated playing career.
The appointment was confirmed yesterday by the Fiji Rugby Union, with Tuwai now tasked with supporting head coach Osea Kolinisau and contributing to the development of the national programme.
Tuwai said the move represents a natural progression after achieving everything as a player on the world stage.
“I’ve given everything on the field as a rugby player and I stand today ready to give that same passion and dedication as an assistant coach,” he said.
He added that his focus is now on helping build a winning culture within the team.
“To help and develop our rugby players today and into the future⦠and bring that championship mindset back to the team,” Tuwai said.
Fiji Rugby Union General Manager High Performance Nacanieli Cawanibuka said Tuwai brings rare experience and deep understanding of the modern sevens game.
“Following a rigorous selection process, Tuwai emerged as a standout candidate, bringing vast experience and tactical understanding of the game,” Cawanibuka said.
He added that Tuwai’s influence will extend beyond the senior squad.
“He will also be closely involved in the development of our sevens coaches across our programs and academy system,” he said.
Tuwai said his transition into coaching was driven by a desire to give back.
“As a player, it’s hard to accept the transition, but now I understand it’s time to translate that knowledge into coaching insight,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of attitude, discipline and culture as key pillars for success in the next generation of Fiji Sevens rugby.
