DESPITE the Ministry of Justice not receiving its expected budget allocation, Line Minister Siromi Turaga remains satisfied with the outcome.
Speaking outside Parliament yesterday, Mr Turaga described the 2026–2027 Budget as a realistic fiscal package rooted in the theme of sustainability.
“I’m happy with the Attorney-General’s Chambers in terms of the main activities, such as the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC), the referendum, and the election,” he said.
The AG’s Chambers was allocated $9.8million in the 2026–2027 Budget to continue delivering legal services across Government and supporting key national reforms.
Acknowledging that the ministry manages a large civil service workforce, Mr Turaga noted that staffing costs remain a substantial challenge. However, he emphasised the need for a compassionate, realistic approach.
“We must be realistic. There is no point in imposing salary cuts because that is going to affect those who are already living in difficult circumstances.”
Looking ahead, the minister identified external investment as the catalyst needed to advance the ministry’s major projects.
“The key issue is investment. The ministry has some big projects, and when investment comes, we will spur things up, but I am happy. These are difficult times.
“It is more realistic to focus on getting the economy back in line.”
