Anyone found with illicit substances such as methamphetamine in Somosomo, Taveuni, will be asked to leave the village.
Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu said the community had a responsibility to protect its people, especially young people, from the harmful effects of drugs.
While he was unaware of the extent of illicit drug activity on the island, Ratu Naiqama said any involvement in drug-related activities would not be tolerated.
“I do not know the scale of white substances or any form of illicit drugs present on the island of Taveuni,” he said.
“However, if anyone is found to be involved in drug-related activities, they should be removed from the village.”
He told village elders the rule applied to everyone, regardless of whether they were from the village or just visiting.
“This applies regardless of whether the person is your brother, relative, or friend.”
He urged villagers to be aware of the people living and moving within their communities and to take responsibility for maintaining a safe environment.
“Drug-related issues can destroy families and affect the future of our children. We cannot ignore activities that may bring harm to our society.”
He said clan leaders, families, and villagers all had a role to play in addressing concerns relating to illicit substances.
He also reminded communities to be mindful of visitors and guests coming into their villages and ensure they respected local values and laws.
