The Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Ministere, Sakiusa Tubuna, has spoken of the need to ensure profitability in the public sector.

Mr Tubuna told a High Salaries Commission seminar in Suva yesterday executive remuneration should be justified by performance and real economic outcomes, not tradition or unchecked political discretion.

“We all recognise the significant impact adequate salaries have on employers’ moral productivity and, ultimately, the success of our organisations,” Mr Tubuna said.

“At the same time, however, we also should be mindful of our collective efforts and state-owned enterprises in ensuring executive remuneration ultimately translates to real creation and tangible economic growth.”

Mr Tubuna told the participants that as representatives of State entities, the onus was on them to ensure their profitability.

“That is the objective of the Government, we want to ensure that if you govern a state entity, make sure that it is profitable.”

The seminar was aimed at enlightening state entities on how to submit remuneration proposals and what was required under the new governance standards.
