The National Fire Authority is again urging Fijians to reduce fires that result in deaths.
NFA CEO Puamau Sowane made the comments after the death of an elderly stroke patient in a house fire in Nadi yesterday.
“You must know our emergency number 910 by heart and call us as soon as possible to allow our firefighters to deploy quickly to the fire scene,” he said.
“Homeowners are urged to observe basic fire prevention strategies such as the proper use of matches, mosquito coils, smoking cigarettes inside homes must stop and storing flammable items in a safe place.”
“Being vigilant inside and outside their homes to prevent the possible outbreak of fire.”
NFA said the house involved in yesterday’s incident belonged to the stroke patient’s son in law and daughter, who were away at work at the time of the fire.
Their two children were at school.
The house sustained 90% structural damage, with the cost of damage estimated at $60,000.00, said NFA.
The property was not insured and did not have an approved building plan from the local municipal council, added NFA.
