THE death of three people in a tragic boat accident off the coast of Navua has left a whole community in mourning.
The deceased who were from Rukua Village in Beqa had allegedly drowned when their boat capsized in treacherous waters while they were making their way to a birthday celebration in Suva.
The boat carrying, Alipate Nuiyagoyago, Jonacani Dabea Sr, Jonacani Dabea Jr, Epeli Seru, Cika Niuyaloyalo and Orisi Cagilaba, had left Rukua Village heading towards Navua where they were expected to arrive. However, tragedy struck with three reported dead and one still missing.
Rukua Village headman Rupeni Velinikoro said the tragedy had left the community in mourning.
“They were travelling to attend Jonacani’s father’s 80th birthday celebration in Suva,” he said.
A police search was activated on Thursday but was postponed because of adverse weather conditions.
According to police, two passengers who survived the ordeal were transported to the Navua Hospital where they were treated and later discharged.
In light of this tragedy, Mr Velinikoro called on mariners to heed weather warnings issued by authorities.
“I request boat captains and members of the public to respect the warnings given by authorities.
“When there is adverse weather, do not attempt to cross to Navua. We must avoid tragedies like this.”
Meanwhile, the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji confirmed a full investigation would be conducted into the incident.
In a statement, MSAF confirmed officers were working closely with the Fiji Police Force and other relevant agencies as response efforts continued.
“The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji is responding to the marine incident that occurred in Navua and confirms that its officers are working closely with the Fiji Police Force and other relevant agencies as response efforts continue,” the statement said.
