Tourists experience Fijian lifestyle, culture

ABOUT 200 cruiseliner tourists got a taste of Fijian culture at Colo-i-Suva Village in the Province of Naitasiri yesterday.

The tourists were part of the cruiseliner Carnival Legend that had berthed at the Suva Harbour for the day. Also included were tourists who came all the way from Port Denarau, Nadi.

Fleets of minibuses, taxis and buses arrived into the picturesque village to explore and enjoy the traditional Fijian setting.

“It’s nice to come out here, spend some money and give something back into the community,” said Rhona Clarke of Australia. The visitors were greeted by traditional chants of welcome by the villagers as tents and stalls of merchandise lined up the village green.

“Whatever money that is being made here goes a long way for the women and the young people of this village,” said Colo-i-Suva villager Usaia Rasuaki.

“It’s also for the village maintenance, etc.

“We do not rely on the Government to help us; we’ve made the initiative to get ourselves going.”

The Carnival Legend is one of five cruise ships that will be berthing in Suva this month.
