Various schools from around the country are expected to dive into action at the Fiji Primary and Secondary Schools Swimming Championships, when it starts this Friday in Suva.

This is the word from Salaseini Lele, the president of the National Primary/Secondary Schools Swimming Association.

Lele says a lot of competition is expected, especially in the senior levels.

“We expect good times, there’s a lot of competition, we are expecting to see faster times amongst the older age group,” Lele said yesterday.

The championships combine various schools from around the country to compete at various age groups.

Joining the competitors will be a group of swimmers who will represent Team Fiji at the Pacific Mini Games in Palau.

“We would like to see them bring down their times and to our little ones with some good times, expecting three or four records to be broken from our school games,” she said.

As their inclusion is expected to intensify the range of competition, she adds the expectation in place to see a development of the sport through first-time competitors.

“We’d like to see also the development of the sport with those children who are trying swimming for the first time at a competitive level.

“This is at the school level, but it’s also the first competition for those who are trying it out for the first time.”

With time ticking to competition day, she highlighted the importance of the championships and how young swimmers have been urged to do their best through their team managers.

“It’s been positive, and we see that there are more and more schools wanting to participate,” she said.

“Those who have children in their schools, that have the potential of representing their schools in swimming; it’s been very great.”

She acknowledged school administrators of the participating schools for allowing the students to take part in the championships, stating if it weren’t for them, such events would not happen.
