TOUCH rugby, nines and rugby sevens are the three sporting opportunities that will be on show at the Fijian Cup, which promises to be a captivating sporting festival aiming to showcase the unique brilliance and flair of talent in Fiji.
As competitors from abroad fly in and those based locally compete for sporting greatness and $50,000 in prizes– the three sports have been chosen to give fans and supporters a chance to support their favourite teams while being played with the backdrop of community service in mind.
Richard Henry, the director of Tourism HQ, revealed the touch rugby category received an overwhelming number of interested teams, 150 in total, however only 24 spots were on offer.
In rugby nines, a concept of rugby league played nine-a-side, teams are playing in the men’s and open women’s categories, with future plans in place to include the under 23 women’s category as a pathway to the NRL Women’s competition and the legends division to retain veteran players.
Rugby sevens is also billed for competition, as the Fijian Cup partners with the Nadroga Rugby Union to allow teams to compete in the open men’s and women’s division, the legends division and the under 85s category.
The tournament will unfold next month, with touch rugby taking place on November 16, rugby sevens on November 23, and the nines competition on November 30 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
Meanwhile, tickets for the tournament are available on Ticketmate and the first 1000 through the gates will receive free sunglasses as well.
