Young minds clashed and strategies unfolded as the Fiji Chess Federation hosted a rapid chess tournament at the University of Fiji’s Lautoka Campus yesterday, drawing 28 participants from across the Western Division.
Top contenders Rudr Prasad, Lionel Varasi, and Navisheel Prasad won all their games in the first three rounds.
Tournament coordinator Prashil Prakash was encouraged by the turnout, especially the strong showing of under-18 players from schools like Swami Vivekananda College (SVC), Korovuto College, Marist Brothers High School, and Lautoka’s Din Bandhu College.
“We had hoped for around 50 players, but having 28 is still a positive sign.
“Interest in chess is growing among the younger generation. Today’s matches have been thrilling, filled with twists and unexpected comebacks,” Prakash said.
Prakash mentioned that the tournament is part of a broader initiative to expand Fiji’s chess community.
“We’re proud to see such enthusiasm and talent in the room. With more frequent tournaments in the future, we expect players to further sharpen their skills and deepen their understanding of the game.”
