Tonga region records 5.3 mag quake

Update: 3:06PM THE Tonga Islands region recorded a 5.3 magnitude earthquake at about 2pm today.

The Seismology Unit of the Mineral Resources department based in Suva said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10km.

It was located 231km South-southeast from Nuku’alofa, Tonga; 637km South-southwest from Alofi, Niue; and 923km Southeast from Suva.

The seismic activity with shallow depth source location did not pose any threat to the Fiji region.
