THE Tonga team is using the Netball Fiji Men’s Invitational Series as a stepping stone towards the 2028 World Cup.

Team manager Silvia Leger Banani says despite losing 18-57 and 18-79 against Fiji on the two opening days of competition, the side showed promising signs after executing much of what they had worked on during preparations.

“I think the team did great. They executed everything that they were taught in training,” Banani said.

She added that while there were areas needing improvement, the exposure gained in Fiji was already proving valuable for the relatively young side.

“We do see a few things that we need to improve on, but that was part of the goal of coming to Fiji anyway, so we’re very happy,” she said.

Banani revealed that the Tonga National Netball Association is discussing future international fixtures with Samoa and Singapore as the team continues preparations for the 2028 Men’s Netball World Cup.

The squad features several new players, with four members making their international debut in Fiji.

“This is their first time to get exposed to international games,” she said.

Banani shared that commitment during the early stages of preparation was a challenge but praised the players for their gradual improvement and dedication leading into the tournament.

She also highlighted financial struggles and lack of experience as challenges faced by both the team and management.

“This is just the second year for our team, so there’s a lot to learn and a lot to improve,” she said.

Banani thanked Netball Fiji and the tournament organisers for providing Tonga with the opportunity to compete and learn against stronger opposition.

She acknowledged the support of the Tongan government, sponsors, families, and Tongans living in Fiji.
