The upcoming Tri-Nations international event in Fiji is shaping up to be the largest international amateur event in the country, according to Fiji Amateur Boxing head coach Cam Todd.

With teams of 30 boxers from Australia and 13 boxers from Samoa set to compete at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva on June 28-29, Todd believes that this event will provide a valuable opportunity for junior and youth boxers of all levels.

“Should be a very good event for our Junior and youth boxers of all different levels, to give them an opportunity to have something international boxing,” said Todd.

“The preparation is going well; we are not in Camp now except for the boxers that I am taking to Australia next month for the golden gloves.

“But a number of these boxers will be competing in the tri-Nations as well.”

He adds the main challenge facing the team, however, is financial constraints, as many of the boxers are still in school or unemployed, making it difficult for them to attend regular training sessions.

The primary goal of the amateur boxing program in Fiji is to develop junior and youth boxers and expose them to international competition in order to strengthen the sport as a whole.
